Question:
I want to have a career change in Nursing. I have earned BS of Computer Science and MS of Telecommunication. However, my undergraduate GPA is horrible - 2.4, but my graduate GPA is about 3.6. My undergraduate grades of all science courses including math, physics, biology, chemistry, etc are B or better. I’m currently taking pre-requisites for the 2nd Degree Accelerated BSN Program and my GPA is about 3.77. Do you think I have a chance there? Did you go for Accelerated BSN program or a traditional BSN program? Which school did you go to? Do you recommend which school I should apply for so that I could start right away?

Whatever your failures in the past, you’ve clearly cleaned up your act. I would think any admissions officer would be delighted to see you apply. On a personal note, I was the same way. My college career was only a 2.4 (in fact my last semester was 1.8).
I went back to school in my mid thirties and had a little better than a 3.6 overall. Amazing how much harder you work when you’re the one paying for things.I currently reside in NJ. I have checked out several schools in the states, but it seems there are a huge number of applicants. Thus, the admission to Nursing program seems to be tougher these days.
If I want to go for ADN, I have to wait at least 1 ˝ years (on the waiting list) and it would take 2 years to finish. I have an associate’s degree in nursing from the local hospital authority. The school I went to doesn’t even exist anymore under the original name. Nursing classes were at the school of nursing; all non-nursing classes were at the University of North Carolina.
Go to whoever will take you first but I’d be cognizant of how they treat students and what their NCLEX success rate is. Remember that if you start with A BSN program you’ll probably never regain the two years of salary you’ll lose by entering the work force two years later. If you want a BSN complete it later in a pathways program. At least you’ll be making money at the same time.Check out the accelerated BSN program at Creighton University in Omaha, NE. I chose nursing as a second career also. If you have the prerequisites and a BS degree, one can obtain the BSN in 1 year. Creighton has offered the accelerated BSN since 1975. The only drawback is that Creighton is private; therefore, it fairly expensive.
