Question:

I am graduating in August from a 24 month Diploma program. I was wondering if any of the people who are graduating in May have had any luck with jobs? Everything I hear about the job market is so discouraging. I live in PA and was also wondering what the job climate was like in Arizona, in particular around the Scottsdale area?
I still have one more year to go and I am starting to worry because I hear that there will not be any hospital jobs when I graduate. I know that home health is the wave of the future, but I have always wanted to work in a hospital. I love Indianapolis and Evansville, does anyone in IN hear any news about jobs?

Answer:

I work at Needles -Desert Communities Hospital, a small rural hospital at the Cal/Nev/Az border right on the Colorado River. We are in Needles Calif. We have quite a few new graduates working at our facility We are located about a 4 hour drive from Scottsdale if you would like any information don’t hesitate to send me e-mail at Rob@rippers.com
I have worked there for over 5 years and the nice thing about the small hospitals is that you have the opportunities to learn all the different areas of the hospital.
I have to second this. I got out of school in Oakland, CA 2 yrs ago and went to work in a small, rural hospital in New Mexico (have family there). I got a job with no problem. Once I started working I was able to cross-train in ICU and OB and was then able to get a full-time job. Now I’m back in Oakland with a good job at a hospital here (although I may be laid off this year since our hospital is looking to merge with another and I have no seniority).
Small, rural hospitals are usually pretty desperate for nurses, esp. RNs. Often you don’t even have to go very far from a major metropolitan area. The town I worked in was one hour from Santa Fe and two hours from Albuquerque. Also you don’t get stuck doing just orthopedics, or renal or neuro, etc. You get a little bit of everything (although the really sick pts. are usually transported out). On the downside, the pay is usually pretty low but it’s definitely an option worth exploring if you want to get hospital experience.
