Question:

How long do you have to be in college to be a midwife?
Answer:
And another, the definitive nurse midwifery site: (The American College of Nurse-Midwives).
Not sure, but I think there is a certificate as well as a masters degree offered in midwifery nursing. I’ve heard that a bachelor’s is required to earn a certificate (1 year). I know a bachelors in nursing is required if you want to accepted into a masters program in midwifery (2 years). So, it looks like it could take up to 5 years or more to become a midwife. But, I’m just starting the nursing program so I’m not sure. This is just what I’ve heard. Hopefully, some of the nurses on the list can help answer your question more thoroughly.
There are midwives out there who never go to nursing school, but an actual midwifery school. There is a magazine called Midwifery Today which can be contacted through: midwif@aol.com There is also a Seattle Midwifery school,
And lastly (of what I am aware of) Orange County, California’s only freestanding birthing center: South Coast Midwifery; women’s healthcare: 714-586-6707
It depends if one is going to school full time (12-16 hours or 4-6 classes) a semester. Furthermore, it also depends if you want to go through an associate degree or bachelor degree program. If you can go full time during every semester you could finish an associate degree program in 2-3 years. On the other hand, it generally takes 4 years for a bachelor’s. If you take summer courses in addition to full time fall and spring semesters, you may even graduate a semester earlier than you planned.
