Question:
Do any of you know what type of schooling it takes to become an NP after you have already gotten your BSN? If so, are any of the schools located in the south (Louisiana, Texas, Mississippi, etc)?

Answer:
How about Tennessee??? I believe that University of Memphis has an NP program. I know a lady that is a Family NP and she either got her schooling at Union university in Jackson, TN or University of Memphis. These are more to keep in mind.
My wife just completed her NNP (neonatal) at Univ of Missouri at Kansas City.
It depends on the type of NP program you take. You can get a full blown masters degree, which could take as long as you want (2 to 4 yr). This is what my wife attained. There is another program that I know is offered at Beth-El College of Nursing in Colorado Springs; it’s a certificate program which entails 6 months of classroom and then 6 months in the clinical setting of the hospital that sponsored you. You won’t have a master’s, but you will be an NP.
Start calling some of the schools or e-mailing them to find out. I have started a NP program at UMKC (univ of MO at Kansas City) after I graduated in May with my BSN. Let me know if that is south enough for you. The NP I go to graduated from the school in Colorado Springs and he is wonderful. He is kinda the reason why I have decided to be a NP.
Several MSN/NP programs down here- Northwestren State University in Shreveport, LA; Mississippi University For Women (Columbia, MS); Baylor, etc. Grambling is working on a program as well.
They are all combined programs, as most of the civilian job slots require an MSN to go with your NP- all of these are primary care-Family or Rural Health programs.
Well Let me see you will need to get a masters first and then go to school I forget how long I believe it is a year to become a NP. Hope this helps more than sci.nursing.
