Forensic nursing degree

Question:

Is anyone out there trained as a sexual assault nurse examiner (SANE)? I'd enjoy hearing from you. We are beginning classes for this role in Mississippi and would be interested in any pointers you have to offer about this practice role. What was not covered in your training that you wish had been? What do you wish you could go back and spend more time learning about?

Can anyone give me some information on Forensic Nursing. What is it? What are some of the responsibilities for someone in this position? Would I need to get a 4 year degree in Nursing? Any information would be helpful. I am searching for a new career!

The program we went through was very extensive, but was so interesting that I was sorry when it ended. I do wish we were given a broader perspective of the programs that exist across the country. I'm not sure if there is a unifying body that determines, for example, the contents of a kit, and would a kit look the same in Mississippi as it would in NYC?

I'm a member of IAFN, and figure with time, and their excellent newsletter, the answer to that question will present itself. BTW, around here we have started using the term SAFE (Sexual Assault Forensic Examiner) to include PA's and MD's who are being trained in the role.

Good luck with your program feel free to email me anytime.

In my experience, the kits do vary from place to place. Not all states have a standard state kit. There are several kit vendors, and there are generic type kits also. Seeing that our hospitals and law enforcement agencies have the latest version of the kit is a big job. Much less ensure that all are using it correctly! Did you have any difficulties applying your classroom information to clinical practice? Was there anything that would have been helpful added to the
training? We're using the IAFN guidelines and other national guidelines, but I'm looking for practical advice here.

Can anyone give me some information on Forensic Nursing?

My husband attended a 3 day seminar in St. Louis for the police dept. investigations unit on Forensics, he met several nurses there and brought me some info…pamphlets. I have to look them up, it was 2 years ago. Actually the nursing part did not sound that exciting to me but the investigation part did this is a sad story but interesting...a mom called the police/fire dept. and said her infant had been burned to death, caught on fire by the stove upon investigations the infant was burned, however, there was no smoke found in her little lungs which meant she was dead before burned and the mom was charged with murder. As soon as I find the info for you I will post it…

Go to the website for the International Association for Forensic Nursing. ANA also has guidelines for forensic practice. Many states have training programs
for sexual assault nurse examiners- check with your local Coalition against Sexual Assault. Also, there are master's level degree programs at several schools of nursing. The Journal of the Emergency Nurses Association has a regular feature on forensics as well regarding sexual assault nurse examiners.
